This is an original painting created for the cover of Jack Vance's science fiction "space adventure" novel, commissioned by Mayflower Publishers, c. 1980 - the date of the 1st UK publication of the book. . . and I show the cover of the proof cover sent to the artist, as well as the marketing information on the reverse, as reference. I am not sure this image was ever used for the cover, or if it was used, it would have had very limited circulation. But it's a marvelous painting, very colorfully executed in the Nepalese "Mahakala" art-influenced style that Haberfield was known for. Painted in gouache on artboard, 16" x 13" with a minor blip to the paint surface to the side/above the "gold" head (see photo) which does not detract from the beauty of the painting.
