This is the original vintage cover painting created for the cover of Robert Silverberg's science fiction novel "The Masks of Time" published by Tandem Books, 1970 (I show the published cover for reference) Vornan-19 arrives on Christmas Day, 1998 in Rome, floating down from the sky naked, and telling those who offer help that he is from the year 2999. How or why Haberfield came up with this Eastern-influenced image, accompanied by a Siamese cat, is unknown - but it is an imaginative accompaniment to the title, and as a marketing device I'm sure worked admirably to get prospective readers to pick up the book! Hand-painted in gouache on artboard, 15.25" x 12.5" with some discoloration to the paint bottom center and some spots near the border.
